Hiram Baseball Wins Game 1, Honors 4 Seniors In Special Doubleheader vs Wooster

Terriers Pick Up 3rd Conference Victory On Memorable Day

HIRAM, Ohio – April 27, 2024 – Hiram baseball had a lot to celebrate on Saturday afternoon at Fishel Field, as the team beat Wooster in Game 1 of a doubleheader (4-3) and honored four seniors: Connor Bansek, Ben Gregg, Jacob Kocuba and Carter Smith.

The Terriers lost Game 2, 10-5, with two more home games remaining this season.

Game 1

Hiram started all four of its seniors to open the day, with Bansek at third base, Gregg in left field, Smith in right field and Kocuba on the mound for his fourth career start. Each individual contributed in their own way: Bansek went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Gregg walked twice out of the five-hole in the lineup, Smith singled and scored a run, and Kocuba worked four innings of two-run ball in his first start since 2021.

Bansek began the charge with a two-run single in the third, while Ethan Lyke keyed a fifth-inning rally with an RBI double. Jack Conley and Landin Wescott handled it from there, as the duo allowed just one run over five innings of relief to earn the win and save, respectively.

Game 2

Wooster bounced back in Game 2, as a four-run second inning – with all four runs being unearned – proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome. Hiram got all of its production in the middle innings, with John Bender (RBI singled), Lyke (two-run double) and Bansek (RBI double) delivering the key base knocks.

Nicolas Chernitsky neared a quality start with a final line of 5 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, while Kaden Anderson did his job with two quality innings of relief. A one-hour rain delay brought an abrupt halt to the game, but the Fighting Scots ultimately prevailed at the end of the long day.

What's Next

Hiram will host Kenyon College for an NCAC doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 12 p.m. from Fishel Field in Hiram, Ohio.
