Hiram Splits Doubleheader With Oberlin, Win Streak Halts At 9

Terriers Pick Up Conference Win On Thursday

OBERLIN, Ohio – April 25, 2024 – Hiram extended its win streak to nine with a 9-0 win over Oberlin in Game 1 before falling in Game 2 (4-2) of a doubleheader with the Yeowomen on Thursday afternoon.

Game 1 Recap

The top of the batting order delivered a big offensive outburst to support Darian Kanno in the circle in the team's victory to start the day. Abriana Schwartz, Fayth Kawamura and Kanno batted a combined .500 (4-for-8) with two doubles, five RBI and four runs scored, while Kanno also did it herself as the team's starting pitcher: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 K.

The bats started cooking in the third inning, when Larissa Baeza scored on an error, Kawamura doubled in a run and Kanno did the same to give the team a three-run lead. Angel Santellan finished the frame with a sacrifice fly to score Kanno and give her teammate some more run support.

The hit parade marched its way to the fourth inning, too, with the Terriers tallying another four runs on four hits. Viviana Macias (RBI double) and Abriana Schwartz (two-run single) highlighted the inning to extend the lead to eight, which put Hiram in position to finish the game in five innings.

Another run in the fifth inning and a scoreless frame from Kanno put the game away and gave Hiram the win in a dominant manner.

Game 2 Recap

Pitching held the upper hand in Game 2, which featured a pitching duel between Santellan and Hailey Alspach. Hiram struck first in the top of the second inning, with Macias hitting an infield single to score Kylie Perez and provide a 1-0 lead early on.

Oberlin got the big hits in the second and fifth innings, with a two-run double and a two-run single putting Hiram in a 4-1 hole. That proved to be the only damage off Santellan, who nearly finished with a complete game.

Daynna Mekaru provided a late spark on an RBI single up the middle, but the Yeomen held on for the win.

What's Next

Hiram will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, when it hosts Kenyon for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Myrtis E. Herndon Field in Hiram, Ohio.
