Hiram Officially Sweeps DH Over Wittenberg After Game 2 Halted Due To Darkness

Terriers Start Conference Season With 2-0 Record

HIRAM, Ohio – April 9, 2024 - The Terriers took Game 2 of the doubleheader over Wittenberg, 7-3, in a game that was cut short due to darkness with two outs in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday evening at Herndon Field.

A hit from the Tigers extended the inning, with the game being called immediately after. With Hiram's lead holding from the start of the seventh inning to the suspension, the Terriers picked up the win and improved to a perfect 2-0 in conference play.

The Terriers rode the hot bats from a 10-2 victory in Game 1 into Game 2. After a shutdown first inning from Angel Santellan, Hiram jumpstarted the offense with three runs in the bottom half. Darian Kanno got the scoring started with an RBI single, bringing home Abriana Schwartz. Then, with two outs, Daynna Mekaru brought home two more with a double to left, giving Hiram a crooked number in the first.

While Santellan continued to deal in the circle, Hiram's bats continued to be red hot. Mekaru drove in Hannah Heath with a single to center field, giving her three RBI in the game and seven on the season. That made it 4-0 Terriers before Viviana Macias walked with the bases loaded to increase Hiram's lead to 5-0 through three frames.

Santellan contributed at the plate to go along with her stellar performance in the circle. She drove in her team-leading 16th run with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Lola Thomas and making it 6-0 in favor of Hiram. Santellan had two hits in three at-bats, improving her batting average to .385 for the season.

Hiram's seventh run came courtesy of Schwartz, who singled home Mekaru in the fifth inning to give the Terriers a touchdown advantage. Schwartz had three hits in the game and is now batting a team-high .422 on the season.

The righty Santellan continued to shine before facing a little bit of trouble in the sixth when the Tigers scored their first two runs of the ballgame. She was replaced after 5.2 innings, giving up just the two earned runs and striking out two. The Lawndale, CA Native picked up her third win of the season.

The Tigers tacked on one more in the seventh, but the early outburst by Hiram proved to be too much as it moved to .500 with a comfortable 7-3 victory.

Hiram will continue conference play on Saturday, when it hits the road and takes on Ohio Wesleyan University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. from Margaret Sagan Field in Delaware, OH.
