Chernitsky Stays Steady, Offense Adds To Big Weekend In 8-3 Win Over Capital

Terriers Improve To 7-5, Take Rubber Match Against Comets

COLUMBUS, Ohio – March 17, 2024 – The rubber match between Hiram and Capital fell in favor of the Terriers on Sunday afternoon at Clowson Field, as the road team added another eight runs behind a masterful outing from freshman Nicolas Chernitsky to give the team an 8-3 victory.

Eight of Hiram's nine hitters in the game recorded a base knock, with Matthew Trimble leading the charge with one run, two hits, two RBI and one walk. Tyler Fernandez and Ethan Lyke each had a double as part of their respective multi-hit days, while Ben Yoder also had two hits out of the nine-hole.

It was another special day for Chernitsky, who has now pitched at least five innings and allowed two-or-fewer earned runs in each of his three career starts with the program. He worked out of traffic in each of the first four innings before allowing just one run in a fifth inning that started with the bases loaded and no outs. His final line earned him a 2-0 record on the young season: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 6 BB, 3 K.

The offense did its part to give Chernitsky some immediate run support; a throwing error allowed Lyke to score and Trimble knocked in a run on a single to carve out a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Two innings later, another throwing error brought in a run and Trimble again singled in a run to bring the margin to four.

The biggest crooked number came in the fifth inning, when Fernandez had an RBI double, Yoder had an RBI single and Evan Fairbanks scored on wild pitch. Chernitsky would allow his only run in the bottom-half of the inning, giving Hiram a sizeable lead that it would hold onto for the remainder of the non-conference contest.

Hiram will stay on the road for an afternoon affair against Thiel on Wednesday; first pitch is slated for 2 p.m. from Tomcat Park in Greenville, PA.
