CLEVELAND, Ohio - December 11, 2024 - The Hiram men's basketball team shot 50% from the field and got big contributions from two of its veteran leaders, but ultimately lost to Case Western Reserve on Wednesday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium, 102-76.
The Terriers went 30-of-60 on field goal attempts for the entire game, with Trent Jakacki tallying 20 points and Ivan Yang scoring 19. The two seniors were a big part of that efficiency, as they went a combined 14-20 (70%) from the field.
Brock Makrancy scored 13 points off the bench and the sophomore tandem of Tristan Martin-Marshall and DJ Niles each had a pair of steals. For Case Western Reserve, Sam Trunley led all scorers in the contest with 23 points.
The Spartans entered the season after a remarkable 2023-24 campaign that saw the team go undefeated at home and eventually advance to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The talent of the program was evident again on Wednesday, with the home team matching Hiram's offensive efficiency with a 58% FG pct for the game.
Hiram grabbed an 11-9 lead early on and eventually went on a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take a 28-24 lead with 8:14 remaining. Jakacki scored seven of those nine consecutive points and finished the first half with 14 points.
Despite leading by two possessions multiple times in the half, CWRU finished the half on a 17-6 run to take a seven-point lead into the intermission.
The Spartans extended that lead to double-digits early in the second half, with 3-point shooting proving to be a big difference in the head-to-head comparison. CWRU finished with 13 3-pointers and had a 41-point boost from its bench to close out the non-conference affair.
Hiram will return to NCAC competition on Saturday, when it hosts Wittenberg at 2 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium in Hiram, Ohio.
