HIRAM, Ohio – January 6, 2024 – Hiram went neck-and-neck against a DePauw team that had 0 losses in the NCAC and 0 losses on the road this season, a hard-fought effort for the Terriers after they nearly knocked off a 10-win Oberlin team earlier in the week.
The impressive performance would come up short, as Hiram trailed by just 1 point at halftime before falling to the Tigers, 70-56, on Saturday afternoon at Price Gymnasium.
Anastasia Lawler and
Maddie Rakestraw each made 3 3-pointers and both finished the game with team-highs in points (13 each).
Diara Parsons was active in many ways for the team, too, tallying 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block.
Hiram jumped out to 12-5 and 15-8 leads in the first quarter, with Lawler scoring 8 points in the first period alone. DePauw would finish the quarter on a 10-0 run.
The Terriers defense, which now ranks second in the NCAC with 58.9 PPG allowed this season, displayed its tenacity in the second quarter. DePauw shot 3-17 in the quarter (17.7%) and went 0-4 from beyond the perimeter; Hiram would win the period, 11-9, to put the halftime deficit at 27-26.
Hiram led early in the third quarter on a Parsons layup, but DePauw's offense came alive for most of the second half. The opposition made half of its shots during that span and regained a double-digit lead that would hold for the last 8:45 of the contest.
After a pair of highly competitive conference matchups, Hiram will now look to pick up its first NCAC win of the year when it travels to Wooster, Ohio to take on the Fighting Scots on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
