HIRAM, Ohio – January 20, 2024 – The Hiram women's basketball team continued its mid-season surge on Saturday, as it rolled to a 57-43 win over Kenyon to pick up a second conference victory and move to 7-10 overall this season.
The Terriers were consistent all game long, outscoring their opposition in all but one quarter. The team won the battle in both points in the paint (40-20) and bench points (21-2) in convincing fashion.
Brooke Hickman had 18 points, 4 assists and 2 steals, while
Payton Black recorded 10 points and 3 steals off the bench.
Maddie Rakestraw added 5 assists and 3 steals to help seal the conference victory.
It was a game defined by defense, as Hiram tied its season-high with 24 forced turnovers (also vs Geneva and Franciscan). That defensive effort led to 29 points off turnovers, 18 of which came in the second half.
After trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, Hiram regained control in the second period, which saw
Payton Black score 8 of her 10 points. On multiple occasions, Black made effective cuts to the hoop without the ball to set up high-percentage shot attempts.
The Terriers led, 26-18, at the intermission.
More of the same balanced play followed in the second half, with Hickman scoring 10 points in the third quarter and five different Hiram student-athletes scoring in the fourth quarter. The team led by 8-or-more points for the entirety of the final 20 minutes.
Hiram will next travel to Granville, Ohio for a conference game against Denison on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside Livingston Gymnasium.
