Balanced Effort Propels Hiram To 2-1 Victory Over Muskingum

Terriers Finish Non-Conference Schedule In Style

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - September 28, 2023 - Hiram did a little bit of everything in its final non-conference game of the season, scoring two goals and holding Muskingum to one shot on goal as part of a well-rounded, 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening at the North Athletic Turf Field.

Matt Callan scored in the eighth minute and Taeven Genovese scored his first career goal in the 77th minute to fuel the offense, while the defense worked well against the Fighting Muskies' four corner kicks and five total shots for the game. Vincent Rienzi also added an assist on the Genovese goal to give him a team-high 3 assists this year, which is also the most assists in a single season of his career.

Hiram wasted no time in the early stages, ripping off four shots in the first eight minutes of the game, the last of which was a goal by Callan. It marked Callan's third goal of the season, which tied Jayden Julia for the most on the roster.

Muskingum was quick to respond, scoring in the 14th minute on what shaped out to be its only shot on goal against Sean Rubin. The score marked the end of the scoring in a back-and-forth, defensive 45 minutes for both teams.

The Terriers took advantage of their opportunities in the second half, with Antonio Vitale getting a shot off in the 76th minute and Genovese knocking in the go-ahead score just one minute later. The freshman out of Streetsboro, Ohio had 4 career shots before delivering the decisive blow on the road.

Muskingum would get a pair of corner kicks, but no shot attempts over the last 25 minutes of the contest. It was a testament to the Hiram defense, which included Travis Shrout, Jeremy Sgro, Simon Schonfeld and Vincent Rienzi, along with the goalkeeper Rubin.

Hiram will kick off its conference schedule on Saturday against the Big Red of Denison at 3 p.m. at Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
