BETHANY, West Virginia - September 13, 2023 - Hiram added to its strong start to the 2023 season with a 1-0 win over Bethany on Wednesday late afternoon, improving its record to 2-1-2 and moving its all-time record against the Bison to 7-2-1.
Sydney Ladage recorded the first goal of their career, while Skyler Huda kept the momentum going with her third career shutout, which already marks the most shutouts in a single season of her career. The Terriers defense as a whole limited the opposition to just 4 shots on goal.
It furthers an impressive beginning to the fall campaign for Hiram; the team has won or tied in four of its first five games for the first time since 2013, when it started 5-0. It also wraps up the team's span of four straight road games, with four consecutive home games to follow for the remainder of September.
Ladage wasted no time in getting Hiram on the scoreboard, as the team's first shot sunk through the back of the net for a goal in the 17th minute. Mackenzie Morrison picked up the assist on the play, which marked the second assist of her career.
The rest of the first half was dominated by defense, as the Terriers wouldn't allow a shot on goal for the final 33 minutes. Olivia Kraft, Caitlin Tucker and Tayleigh Price would all get shots off on the offensive end of the field, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of Hiram.
The Terriers held strong in the second half, too, by fending off a corner kick in the 49th minute and a pair of saves by Huda in the 57th and 58th minutes. Reagan Mory would fire a shot toward the center of the goal, but a save would keep the margin at one.
Hiram was in control for a tight final 15 minutes, as it defended another corner kick well in the 80th minute and held on for yet another non-conference road victory (also beat Muskingum, 1-0, on September 6).
Head coach Kaela Kovanda and company will return to action on Saturday, when they celebrate Senior Day against Franciscan at 3 p.m. from Henry Field.
