PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - May 4, 2023 - Hiram continued to pile up the production in the late innings, scoring 2 runs in the ninth inning of a 9-7 win over Chatham on Thursday night at West Field.
Chaisson Marrs and Michael Corsillo lifted a pair of sacrifice flies to the opposite field to set up Jacob Kocuba for his 2nd save of the season. The first seven hitters in the Terriers lineup all recorded at least 1 RBI, with Connor Bansek leading the way with 2 hits and 3 RBI.
Hiram led by as many as 7 runs in the game before hanging on in the late innings. The team never trailed in the non-conference contest; its record improved to 14-24, while Chatham fell to 18-17.
The Terriers built a 7-0 lead with 3 runs in the fourth inning and 4 runs in the fifth inning. Five different players recorded an RBI single during that span: Mike Midea, Bansek (2 singles, 3 RBI), Hal Walker Jr. and Evan Fairbanks.
Chatham was able to score 7 runs between the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Peter Tadic hit a 3-run homer to highlight the home team's offense.
Then came the Hiram offense again in the top of the ninth; Matthew Trimble reached on a walk and Marco Bates laid down a bunt and reached second base on an error. Trimble would advance to third base on the play, putting two runners in scoring position with the score tied.
The situational hitting atop the Terriers lineup did the rest of the work, with Marrs and Corsillo both taking the ball the other way to score Trimble and Bates on sacrifice flies. Kocuba retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the non-conference win on the road.
Hiram will look to carry Thursday's momentum into Saturday, when it celebrates Senior Day before playing host to DePauw for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The twin bill marks the team's final games of the season.
