NEW WILMINGTON, Pennsylvania - April 30, 2023 - It was a big bounce-back effort for Hiram baseball on Sunday, with the team erasing an early deficit and beating Westminster, 8-7.
Noah Brown earned the victory thanks to 3 hitless innings of relief, while seven different hitters recorded a base hit. A 4-run fifth inning proved to be a key turning point, with Hiram gaining a 6-3 advantage and holding that lead for the remainder of the non-conference battle.
The top-four hitters in the Hiram lineup – Chaisson Marrs, Michael Corsillo, Hal Walker Jr. and Evan Fairbanks – all made an impact. They combined for 4 hits, 7 walks and 6 runs scored.
The Terriers were down 2-0 before cracking the scoring column a Walker Jr. RBI single in the third and a Mike Midea RBI groundout in the fourth. Westminster responded with another run to put the score at 3-2 through 4 innings.
Then came the crooked number, as Hiram was able to take advantage of the opposition's defensive miscues to tally 4 runs, all of which came with 2 outs. Marrs, Corsillo and Walker Jr. all reached base before an error gave Hiram a 4-3 lead. Another run would eventually score on a wild pitch and Midea capped off the inning with an RBI single.
The remainder of the Terriers offense came in the form of a Jordan Mallernee RBI triple and Aidan Jantz sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Hiram's bullpen was able to preserve the lead the rest of the way, with Brown working a career-long 3 innings and surrendering just 3 baserunners. Jacob Kocuba got the final 2 outs of the game to seal the win.Â
Hiram will return to action on Tuesday at Kenyon for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
