HIRAM, Ohio - April 10, 2023 - The Hiram softball team split its doubleheader with Marietta on Monday, winning Game 1 (6-2) and losing Game 2 (4-2).
The team's overall record moves to 12-8, with more non-conference play to come on Thursday at home against Penn State Behrend beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Trinity Meza earned her third victory of the season behind two-hit efforts from Megan Moser and Darian Kanno in Game 1. Ryan Leto highlighted Game 2 with a complete game on the mound.
Game 1 Recap
Multi-run innings were the difference in the first game, with Hiram scoring 2 runs in the first and 4 runs in the third. Moser and Kanno each had RBI singles in the first frame to give the Terriers a quick advantage.
While Meza continued to hang zeroes, the Hiram offense returned with another 3 RBI singles in the fourth inning by Angel Santellan, Larissa Baeza and Victoria Garcia. Baeza would also come around to score on a stolen base attempt by Garcia to carve out a 6-0 lead.
Meza's final line was enough to even her season record to 3-3: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R/ER, 5 BB, 2 K. Jeskari Rodriguez then worked out of a bases-loaded jam and finished with her first save of the campaign.
Game 2 Recap
Ryan Leto gave the Terriers the best outing of her young career in Game 2, effectively managing traffic on the basepaths and finishing with just 3 earned runs charged to her stat line: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K. Marietta scored all 4 of its runs in the first three innings before Leto settled in.
The Hiram offense matched its opposition with 7 hits, including 1 hit by each of the first four hitters in the batting order. Garcia also had multiple hits out of the seventh spot in the lineup.
Marietta pitchers Jillian Middleton and Breanna Zirkle combined for 7 quality innings to keep their team's slim lead intact. The remainder of the Terriers offense came on RBI groundouts by Moser and Santellan.
