HIRAM, Ohio - March 28, 2023 - Hiram swept its second straight doubleheader and improved to 10-4 with a pair of victories over Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday afternoon (9-2 and 4-3).
A 7-run first inning fueled the team in Game 1 before Kylie Perez hit a walk-off triple to win Game 2.
Darian Kanno did a little bit of everything in the doubleheader, recording 2 RBI as a hitter in Game 1 and pitching 6.2 innings of 1-run ball as a pitcher in Game 2.
Game 1 Recap
The Terriers tallied 7 runs on 7 hits in the first inning, with Kanno starting the rally with a 2-run single. Victoria Garcia, Bailey Wilhite, Danielle Robles and Fayth Kawamura each followed with run-scoring singles to give the home team some cushion in the early stages.
Angel Santellan was solid in her start and finished with a final line of 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Freshman Laci Carter took it from there and earned her first collegiate victory in relief: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 K.
The remainder of the offense came on a Giselle Bahena RBI single and an unearned run in the 4th inning. Hiram nearly doubled its opposition in hits for the game (11 to 6).
Game 2 Recap
It was a different style of game in the second half of the doubleheader, with Carnegie Mellon's Haley Pucci and Kanno going head-to-head in a pitching duel. The Terriers struck first on a Kylie Perez sacrifice fly in the first inning and Bahena RBI single in the second frame.
While Kanno continued to keep the opposing offense at bay, Hiram added to its production on an RBI single by Santellan through the right side of the infield in the fifth inning. Perez and Santellan each finished with multiple hits in the third and fourth spots in the batting order.
Carnegie Mellon leveled the score with 2 runs in the sixth inning, but Kanno re-entered as the team's pitcher and kept it a tie game heading into the home half of the seventh. For the day, the sophomore had a line of 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K.Â
Perez won the game on a triple that skied its way to the left-center field gap, sending Kawamura around the bases for the game-winning score. The victory marked Hiram's first walk-off win of the year.
