HIRAM, Ohio - March 22, 2023 - The Hiram softball team did a little bit of everything in its doubleheader sweep over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, winning 3-2 and 7-6 at Herndon Field.
The Terriers got a three-hit effort from Fayth Kawamura to fuel a complete game masterpiece by Angel Santellan on the mound in Game 1. The team then showed its resilience by erasing a 6-2 deficit and pulling out a one-run win in Game 2.
Hiram is now 8-4 on the season, with a doubleheader against Westminster coming up on Monday at 3 and 5 p.m.
Game 1 Recap
The Yellow Jackets scored in the first inning, but Hiram responded and tied the game on a RBI single by Kylie Perez. Following the games on Wednesday, Perez has now hit safely in 8 of her 12 games played.
The Terriers returned to the scoring column in the fourth inning, when Megan Moser singled in Victoria Garcia. Baldwin Wallace would even the score in the fifth on an RBI double.
The decisive moments came in the last third of the game; Darian Kanno brought home Kawamura on a single and Santellan continued to hang zeroes on the scoreboard to secure the win.
Santellan finished the day with a line of 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K. It marked the seventh time she pitched at least 7 innings in her career at Hiram.
Game 2 Recap
Garcia got the Terriers going with a 2-run single to start the second game of the day; the senior finished the game with her first multi-RBI performance of the campaign. Baldwin Wallace would score 6 runs in the second inning to earn the early 6-2 advantage.
Hiram wasn't going down easily, though, as the combination of Kanno on the mound and the balanced Hiram lineup was more than enough to piece together a comeback. Kanno's relief outing included 3.2 innings of 1-run ball.
Abriana Schwartz was a catalyst on the offensive end, recording a pair of RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings to cut the margin to two runs. Giselle Bahena would then deliver a clutch two-run single to right field to tie the game and bring a supportive home crowd to its feet.
The go-ahead run would score on a wild pitch, with Kanno alertly advancing from third base to give the Terriers their first lead since the score was 1-0. Trinity Meza pitched well in relief to earn the victory.
