MARIETTA, Ohio – November 4, 2023 – The Hiram women's volleyball team lost in four sets to Marietta at Ban Johnson Arena on Saturday afternoon: 25-17, 14-25, 13-25, 15-25.
It marked the team's final game of the regular season, with the quarterfinals of the NCAC Tournament set to begin on Tuesday.
The Terriers offense was led by
Cate Maguire and
Andrya Hanmore, who totaled 12 and 11 kills respectively. Hanmore's 11 kills were a new career-high through 75 career matches.
Also contributing on the offensive end was
Brooke Fishback with 17 assists and 3 service aces, while
Erin Burke had 14 assists.
Brooke Norris (15 digs), Burke (10) and Fishback (10) each had 10+ digs.
Cate Maguire and
Kayla Franks had 7 combined total blocks to round out the production.
Hiram played its best volleyball in the first set, pulling ahead 6-3, 11-5 and eventually 25-17 on the heels of a 7-0 run to end the set. Five different Terriers student-athletes had at least one kill in the set: Maguire, Hanmore,
Emily Richardson,
Claire Brunner and
Karissa Zelenak.
Marietta would regain its form in the following three sets, playing strong defense and racking up 50 kills during that span, 40 of which were in the second and third sets. The Pioneers would keep applying pressure in the fourth set and eventually won the match to improve their home record to a perfect 8-0.
Hiram will now turn its attention to the NCAC Tournament, beginning with the quarterfinal round against #4 Oberlin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Philips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio.
