Hiram Erupts For 88 Points In Convincing Win Over Defiance

Terriers Earn First Win Of Season Behind Multiple Breakout Performances

DEFIANCE, Ohio - November 27, 2023 - A healthy dose of offense was just what the Hiram women's basketball team needed on Monday evening, as the Terriers scored their most points in a game since November 2021 with an 88-71 victory over Defiance at the Karl H. Weaner Center.

The Terriers shot 56% from the field (35-63) and totaled 49 points in the second half alone. The 88 points marked their most in a non-overtime game over the last three seasons; Hiram had previously scored 89 points in an overtime win against Waynesburg on Nov. 5, 2021.

Brooke Hickman recorded her second double-double of the season, rattling off 19 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. The 19 boards were the most in a single game by a Hiram student-athlete since Erica Johnson had 20 rebounds against Wittenberg in February 2018.

Anastasia Lawler led the bench unit and tied a career-high with 17 points, while Diara Parsons set a new career-high with 12 points in the starting backcourt. First-year Payton Black also tallied 11 points for the second straight contest.

The Terriers thrived in the painted area throughout the contest, outscoring their opposition in paint points, 52-20. Hickman was a key part of that high-percentage production, while also adding 2 blocks and 2 steals to help her team to a big advantage in points off turnovers (26-16).

Hiram played its best basketball following some early adversity; the team trailed 20-19 at the end of the first quarter before roaring back and taking a 39-33 lead at the intermission. The Terriers defense held the Yellow Jackets to a 29% clip (4-14) from the field in the second quarter.

Then came the offense, with Hickman scoring 9 points in the third quarter to help expand the margin to double-digits. Lawler would find the hot hand and scored 7 points over the last 1:23 of the period to carve out a 13-point lead, the largest by either team in the contest.

The Terriers held strong and scored another 25 points in the fourth quarter to earn the win. Fourteen different Hiram student-athletes logged action, 11 of whom recorded at least 2 points.

Hiram will continue non-conference competition on Wednesday, when it welcomes Heidelberg at 6 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium in Hiram, Ohio.
