Hiram Hangs Around In Close Game At Wittenberg

Terriers Lose 21-7 Against Tough Opponent

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – October 7, 2023 – Hiram played some of its best football of the season on Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field, holding Wittenberg scoreless in the second and third quarters before scoring a touchdown of its own as part of a 21-7 loss.

The Terriers had nearly as much total offense (306 yards) as the Tigers (377 yards), and almost had twice as many passing first downs as its opposition (13 to 7). Sean Tejeda had a season-high 226 passing yards and Jordan Townsend had a career-high 107 receiving yards, while Anthony Brumbaugh scored his second touchdown of the year.

On the defensive side, Tonvonta Revis tied a career-high 12 tackles to go along with a pass breakup. Gavin Cruser and Kole Tarary had a combined 17 tackles in the game, which included a pair of tackles for loss.

Wittenberg, a tough opponent who was coming off an overtime win on the road at Denison, improved to 4-1 this season.

The first half was low scoring on both ends, with Wittenberg notching a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and coming up empty on its two drives in the second quarter. The time of possession was balanced between both sides, too, with the offenses piecing together solid gains and sustaining drives before the defenses would prevail.

The Terriers defense again held its own in the third quarter, with Wittenberg punting twice on two straight three-and-outs and then turning it over on downs on its final play of the third quarter. Hiram entered the fourth quarter with the ball and trailing by two possessions.

A nine-play, 78-yard drive that carried over from the third quarter was enough to get Hiram on the board, with Brumbaugh charging it in from three yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7. Also featured on the drive was a 29-yard rush by Tejeda, the team's third-longest play of the game (31-yard reception by Jairus Green | 30-yard reception by Jordan Townsend).

Wittenberg answered back with a methodical, 14-play scoring drive that ended on a 2-yard touchdown rush. The Tigers had 272 rushing yards for the day.

Green had the 31-yard reception to pull Hiram into opposing territory, but the drive would stall at the 29-yard line to end a promising effort from the road team.

Hiram will now head home for the next two weeks; the team will welcome the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
