HIRAM, Ohio - January 31, 2023 - Hiram opened its AMCC schedule with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-12 win over Mount Aloysius on Tuesday at Price Gymnasium.
It was a breakout game for the Terriers, who recorded season-highs in digs (40) and total blocks (10). The team also had 27 kills, its most in a 3-set match this year and 3rd-most in any match.
Kyle Martini led the way with 11 kills, while Garrett Scheidegger chipped in 5 kills and tied a career-high with 6 total blocks. Jarod Leynes had a big day, too, posting 3 kills, 10 digs and 2 service aces.
Hiram came out firing on all cylinders by scoring 9 of the first 10 points of the match, 7 of which came with Leynes serving. The Terriers would not trail for the entirety of the opening set.
Mount Aloysius held strong in the second set, leading by as many as 4 points in the early stages. Hiram responded well, though, going on a 6-0 run to take a 24-21 lead and eventually a 25-23 win in the set. Five of Hiram's 6 points during the run again came with Leynes serving.
The final set was a complete effort, with five different players recording a kill, including Martini with 4 kills. The Terriers once again did not trail in the set to improve to 1-0 in conference play this season.
Hiram will next play a non-conference doubleheader in Springfield, Ohio against Wabash at 2 p.m. and Wittenberg at 4 p.m. this Saturday.
