Box Score Hiram, OH -- Sept. 21, 2022 -- Just when it looked like the Women's Volleyball team was going to extend its six-game win streak -- winning the first two sets -- Mt. Union spoiled the effort by taking the final three sets on Wednesday evening in Hiram's Price Gym, 25-21, 36-34, 16-25, 20-25 and 6-15. Â
In the opening, set, Hiram led 15-8, before Mt. Union came back within two, 23-21. After a timeout, Hiram won the final two points of the set.
In set #2, Hiram and Mt. Union played the closest, most exciting and longest set of the season. The Terriers led by five at 17-12 but the Purple Raiders caught fire and tied the game 24-24. The score was then tied at every point from 24 to 34 with the ""set point" going back and forth between the two teams, before Hiram captured the last two points to win, 36-34.
Set 3 started with Hiram up two sets to none, but Mt. Union seemed to get stronger as the match wore on. Mt. Union led 12-8 and 18-12. Hiram closed the gap to 18-15 but Mt. Union ripped off seven of the last eight points for the 25-16 win. Mt. Union had a .400 hitting percentage in that set.
In the fourth set, after a tie at 7-7, the Purple Raiders scored the next five points to go up, 12-7. They increased their advantage to 18-12, but the Terriers showed life with the next four points to come within two at 18-16. Hiram came even closer at 21-20, but Mt. Union captured the final four points to win, 25-20, and tie the match at two sets apiece.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           In the fifth and deciding set, Mt. Union raced out to a lead of 10-2 and held off the Terriers, 15-6, to win the match.                                                                                                                                                                                                    Â
Leading the way for the Terriers on offense was junior outside
Mackenzie Brannon with 14 kill shots. Junior outside hitter
Madison Burns added eight kills while hitting .320. Freshman setter
Brooke Fishback notched 17 assists while sophomore setter
Mary Landis contributed 16 assists.
Defensively, freshman
Kelly Hoffman dug up a match-high 42 balls while freshman
Brooke Norris added 22 digs.
Senior middle
Lyndsey Johns was in on four blocks and sophomore middle
Emily Richardson added three blocks.
Mt. Union improved to 10-3 while Hiram stands proudly at 9-4. The Terriers are next in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Ohio Wesleyan.
