Hiram Baseball Sweeps Oberlin in Season Finale

OBERLIN, Ohio – May 7, 2022 – Hiram baseball picked up a Saturday sweep against Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play to close out the season. In comeback fashion, the Terriers won game one 9-7 and won game two by a score of 5-4.
 
GAME ONE: Hiram 9, Oberlin 7
After a clean first inning from each team's pitcher, Oberlin got the scoring started with a two-run home run by Chris Wolfe as the home team played from out in front.

The Yeomen added to their lead in the third inning with a pair of RBI doubles. Jake Freed hit a two-run double, followed by an RBI two-bagger from Wolfe.

Hiram got on the board in the fourth inning after Hal Walker Jr. scored on a balk.

Up 5-1 entering the fifth inning, Oberlin scored two more runs, one from a fielding error and another on an RBI sacrifice fly from Max Anastasio.

The comeback started for the Terriers in the fifth inning with Kyle Working hitting an RBI double that scored Cody Wilson. Connor Bansek tallied the second run of the inning with Walker Jr. reaching on a fielding error.

In the sixth, Bansek continued to help Hiram inch closer, hitting an RBI double that scored Michael Corsillo.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Wilson started the scoring in the eighth with an RBI single that made the game 7-5. Walker Jr. then hit a two-run home run, his first of his career, tying the ballgame at seven.

Corsillo hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth that made the score 9-7 Terriers.

Oberlin put two on in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't score as Jacob Kocuba closed out the game for Hiram.

Jack Conley made the start for Hiram, pitching 6.1 innings and picking up three strikeouts. In relief, Austin Smith had a clean two outs, with Kocuba improving to 5-3 on the year throwing two innings with four punchouts.

At the dish, Wilson had a four-hit day with Walker Jr. collecting three hits including his game-tying home run. Bansek and Corsillo also had two hits in game one.
 
GAME TWO: Hiram 7, Oberlin 4
Max Anastasio started the scoring in game two for Oberlin, hitting an RBI groundout with the Yeomen up early.

Bansek evened the game at one in the third inning after hitting an RBI single that scored Wilson. Alex Vaughan gave the Yeomen the lead back after hitting an RBI single scoring Anastasio.

The middle frames of the second game were scoreless as the game stayed tight up until a busy sixth inning. Senior Devin Houdeshell tied the game at two after hitting a solo home run. Hiram then took a 4-2 lead after the inning.

Michael Corsillo reached on a fielding error that scored Chaisson Marrs and Bansek had an RBI after a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

It didn't take long for Oberlin to get back, as the home team tied the game at four in the bottom half of the inning.

In the eighth, Evan Fairbanks hit a pinch-hit solo home run for the second time this season. The Fairbanks shot put Hiram back up by a score of 5-4.

Hiram plated two more insurance runs with Marrs getting an RBI walk and Corsillo with an RBI single.

Kocuba closed out the game by picking up his fifth save of the season.

Additionally, on the mound, Stephen Javorek pitched five innings with one strikeout. Smith picked up four outs, Aidan Stephens claimed his first win of the season and Kocuba finished out the Oberlin lineup.

Seven Terriers had at least one hit in game two. Bansek and Corsilo had two hits on the afternoon.

With the two wins, Hiram finishes the season with a record of 17-23 and a 6-12 record in conference play. The regular season and conference win totals are the most under Head Coach Phil Brua.

Additionally, the 17 wins are the most since 2005 and the six conference wins are the most since 2014.
