Hiram Men’s Lacrosse Falls Just Short in Senior Day Finale vs. Wabash

HIRAM, Ohio - April 30, 2022 Though the Terriers struck first and led at the half, Hiram College men's lacrosse fell to the Wabash College Little Giants, 8-6, on Senior Day on Saturday at Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium.

Though the Little Giants won the opening face-off, Bricen Jones made two early saves, and after a Hiram clear, Ethan Mayer found the back of the net off an assist from Trevor Nordstrom to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead with 12:36 to play in the first.

Hiram held a one-goal lead for almost eight minutes, until Anthony Ngyuen scored his first of four goals, pushing it past Jones off Jeremiah Eaton's assist with 4:49 left in the first quarter to even the score at one-all.

Neither team would get a shot on goal the rest of the period, and the Terriers and Little Giants headed into the second quarter tied at one.

After a little under six minutes of play, Wabash took their first lead of the match on Josh Taylor's goal, assisted by Caulin Fitzgerald, with 9:10 left in the first half. And after a Wabash timeout, the Little Giants quickly added another, extending their lead to 3-1 on Nguyen's second of the day, off another Fitzgerald assist, to make it 3-1 Little Giants.

Down 3-1, Hiram clawed their way back, scoring three unanswered to head into the locker room with a 4-3 lead.

Ambrose Colliluori answered Nguyen's second goal of the afternoon with his first, pulling Hiram within one off an assist from Brett Johnson with 3:22 to play.

And then just seconds later, Mayer again found the back of the net off Markus Johnson's face-off win and assist, evening the score at 3-3 with just under three minutes to play in the first half.

The Terriers would then add another, this time with a man-advantage, on Brett Johnson's goal, assisted by Trevor Flugum, with 50 seconds to play, to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.

But the Little Giants quickly tied things up just 20 seconds into the third on Joseph Plencer's man-up goal, and then took the lead with 12:12 remaining in the third on Josh Taylor's first goal of the afternoon.

Nguyen and Taylor would each score another to make it 7-4 with just over two minutes left in the quarter, as Hiram's offense went without a goal in the third period.

After almost four minutes of scoreless lacrosse to start the fourth, Colliluori pulled Hiram back within two, forcing a turnover and picking up a groundball right in front of the goal.

But Nguyen answered on the other end, putting Wabash back up by three, 8-3, with 10:29 to play.

Colliluori would again pull Hiram within two with 5:01 to play, notching his 31st goal of the year, off another Wabash turnover in front of the net, but it would prove to be too little, too late, as the Little Giants held Hiram off the scoreboard the rest of the way to finish off the 8-6 victory.

Colliluori led Hiram with three goals, while four Terriers: Flugum, Brett and Markus Johnson, and Nordstrom, each tallied an assist.

Mayer tallied a team-high nine shots, scoring two goals, while Markus Johnson won four face-offs.

Defensively, Gray Perry led Hiram with four groundballs, while Jones made 16 saves in goal.

Wabash moves to 4-12 (1-8 NCAC) with the win, while Hiram wraps up the year at 4-10 (0-9 NCAC).
