CINCINNATI, Ohio - March 8, 2022 – Six Terriers recorded hat tricks and Hiram men's lacrosse scored the most goals in a game in program history as they defeated Mount St. Joseph, 22-10, on Tuesday at the Mount Sports Complex and Schueler Field.
The Terriers got the scoring started quickly just 40 seconds into the first quarter, as
Trevor Flugum notched his first of four goals on the day off an assist from
Noah Pilgram to give Hiram a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later,
Ambrose Colliluori notched his first goal of the day off an assist from
Brett Johnson, to extend Hiram's lead to 2-0 with 11:16 left in the first.
Flugum then added another off
Trevor Nordstrom's assist with 9:24 remaining in the first, before Mount St. Joseph got on the scoreboard on Mason Meilnger's first goal.
Meilnger added two more to knot the score at 3-3 with 4:35 left in the period, before
Brett Johnson broke the tie with his first goal of the afternoon, giving Hiram a 4-3 lead.
Meilnger again knotted the score at 4-4 with his fourth goal, but back-to-back goals by Pilgram, both unassisted, gave the Terriers a 6-4 lead after one-quarter of play.
Pilgram then made it back-to-back-to-back, opening the second quarter with his third goal of the afternoon with 12:08 to play in the first half of an assist from
Ethan Mayer.
Three minutes later, Flugum added his second, extending Hiram's lead to 8-4.
Meilnger then added another, cutting Hiram's lead to 8-5 with 6:51 to play, but Colliluori responded with another goal of his own to put the Terriers back up by four, and then assisted Mayer on his first goal on the day to make it a five-goal lead.
The Terriers would add two more in the second period, on
Brett Johnson's second goal, assisted by Colliluori with 2:21 left, and Mayer's second goal, assisted by Johnson with 38 seconds left to take a 12-5 lead into the halftime break.
Nordstrom continued the Terriers' scoring onslaught in the third, extending Hiram's lead to 13-5 with his second goal of the day 36 seconds into the third quarter.
Later on in the period, Collilouri added another unassisted goal to make it 14-5, before
William Luketich got on the scoreboard off an assist from Nordstrom to make it a 15-7 ballgame headed to the fourth.
Hiram kept the scoring going in the final period, scoring seven goals in the fourth to record the most goals in a game in program history, breaking the previous record set against Franciscan on Feb. 23, 2019, and Mount St. Joseph on March 9, 2020.
Pilgram added his fourth goal of the day to open the fourth quarter off an assist from Colliluori, making it a 16-7 game, before Flugum tallied his fourth with 11:38 to play.
Up 17-8, Nordstrom made it 18-8 with 10:46 to play, and Mayer, off an assist from Colliluori, made it 19-8, before Nordstrom completed his hat trick to make it 20-8 in favor of the Terriers with just over nine minutes left.
Colliluori then notched his fourth, scoring an assisted goal with 6:11 left to make it 21-8, before
Brett Johnson broke the record and completed his hat trick, extending Hiram's lead to 22-8 with 5:51 left.
Mount St. Joseph would score a pair of late goals down the stretch to hit double digits, making the final score 22-10 in favor of the Terriers.
Hiram moves to 3-1 with the win, picking up their second-straight, while Mount St. Joseph drops to 1-5 with the loss.
Six Terriers recorded hat tricks, led by four-goal performances by Colliluori, Flugum and Pilgram.
Colliluori added five assists, five ground balls and one caused turnover for a total of nine points, tied for the third-most in a game in program history, while Pilgram added an assist and seven ground balls.
Rounding out the Terriers' six hat tricks,
Brett Johnson, Mayer and Nordstrom each tallied three goals, with Johnson and Nordstrom each adding two assists.
Defensively,
Markus Johnson and
Gray Perry each tallied a team-high eight ground balls, while in goal,
Bricen Jones (3-1) earned the win, recording eight saves.
In the face-off circle,
Markus Johnson won 17 of his 27 face-offs, while Luketich went 9-for-9.
The Terriers will look to keep things rolling when they wrap up non-conference play at Earlham College on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
