HIRAM, Ohio – March 2, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball dropped an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) match inside Price Gymnasium vs. Thiel, 3-2 on Wednesday night.
In set one,
Kilvio Montero had an attack error giving Thiel a slight 7-3 at the beginning of the match. Hiram stormed back, however, after an attack error from the Tomcats made the score even at ten. During the middle stages of the first set, the score remained close.
The visitors took an 18-16 lead, but Hiram fought back going up 19-18 after a
Cory Fischer service ace. With the score tied at 19, Thiel scored six of the next eight points winning the first set, 25-21.
Hiram raced out to a 7-3 lead after a Tomcat attack error at the start of the second set. A
Tom Supan kill started a run of trading points between each team with Hiram still holding the edge.
The Terriers began to break away after multiple attack errors from Thiel saw the home team increase their lead to 18-14. A quick and fast rally from the Tomcats ensued, scoring five-straight.
Tied at 19, Hiram ripped off five of the final six points of the set with a
Nathan Cassell kill finishing the job at 25-22.
Another big Hiram run at the beginning of the third set put the Terriers up 8-3 after a Supan kill. As the set progressed, the dominating set from Hiram continued, now up 16-6 after an attack error and a Supan service ace.
Six of the final seven points of the set went Hiram's way, with two
Andrew Diaz de Padilla kills, two
Dangelo Boehner kills and a kill from Supan made it 25-11.
Up 2-1, Hiram surrounded a 10-4 lead to Thiel at the beginning of the fourth set. The Tomcat run continued, now up 16-7 after capturing five of six points in the middle of the set.
Hiram rallied following the big lead, now down 18-14 after a Boehner kill. Thiel answered the comeback attempt, going up 22-16 looking to put the set away. The visitors secured the final three points of the set, winning 25-22.
In the fifth and final set, neither team jumped too far ahead of the other. Down early at 4-2, Hiram quickly answered tying the set at four. A flurry of back-and-forth volleyball would follow, as each team traded points with the other up until the score was again tied at seven after a Supan kill.
Three straight points from the visitors made the score 10-7 with Hiram looking to bounce back. Kills by Boehner and Diaz de Padilla tied the set at 13, but the Tomcats picked up the final two points, winning 15-13.
Supan registered a double-double in the defeat with 15 digs and 11 kills. Cassell led the team with 12 kills while also getting six digs. Diaz de Padilla put up 36 assists and nine digs.
Kilvio Montero posted nine digs with six kills.
With the loss, the team picks up its first conference and second home loss on the season going to 5-1 in AMCC play and 6-2 inside Price Gymnasium.
The team next hits the court on Saturday, March 5 in Erie, Pa. when they battle with Penn State Altoona and Penn State Behrend at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
