Hiram Baseball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader vs. Haverford

Fort Myers, Fla. – March 11, 2022 – Hiram baseball continued play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Friday, dropping two games vs. Haverford. The Terriers fell in game one 8-2 and were defeated in game two, 7-3.

Game #1: Haverford 8, Hiram 2

In the top of the first inning, Henry Genth hit an RBI single that started the scoring for Haverford. Zach Landry scored on a wild pitch which was followed by Anthony Runfola hitting an RBI single giving the Fords the early 3-0 lead.

After a quiet third inning, Kyle Workman and Cody Wilson hit back-to-back singles with Wilson advancing to third base on the hit. Wilson was then thrown out at second base, however, Workman was able to score on the throw down putting the Terriers on the board.

Haverford answered the Hiram run with a two-run inning in the bottom half of the third. Wallis and Oliver Bergeron had RBI singles with the Fords increasing their lead to 5-1.

Three more runs ensued for the Fords, taking an 8-1 lead. Hal Walker Jr. blasted an RBI single bringing in Caleb Giesken. No further damage was done, with Haverford winning 8-2.

Daniel Quintero Jr. made the start for Hiram picking up the loss after pitching four innings and getting three strikeouts. Kaden Anderson, in his collegiate debut, pitched a scoreless inning of relief picking up a strikeout.

Cody Wilson had two hits game one along with a stolen base. Walker Jr.'s double is the second in his young career as the freshman also had an RBI.
 
Game #2: Haverford 7, Hiram 3

Hiram struck first in game two with Kyle Workman leading the game off with a walk. Workman worked his way around the bases, eventually scoring on a wild pitch after a throwing error and groundout moved him to third.

Connor Bansek smashed a two-run triple scoring Devin Houdeshell and Walker Jr. as the Terriers had the early 3-0 lead.

Game two starter Stephen Javorked sailed through the first three innings. The right-handed pitcher had allowed three hits in the early portion of the game.

In the fourth inning, Zach Crampton hit a solo home run getting Haverford their first run of the game. Luke Smith reached on a fielding error that scored a runner for the Fords with the score now 3-2.

The next inning, Haverford took the lead. Crampton followed his previous up with a two-run double giving the Fords their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Pranav Rane continued the inning with an RBI single followed by Zach Becker capping off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single.

With the score now 6-3, the Fords tacked on one additional run in the sixth with Daniel Rosman scoring on a wild pitch closing out the scoring at 7-3.

Stephen Javorek pitched four innings with a strikeout allowing one earned run. Jacob Kocuba took the loss for Hiram, with Ben Gustely and Matthew Kardos pitching scoreless innings of relief in the defeat.

Bansek was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game while collecting three RBI. Walker Jr. also recorded one hit in game two.

The final day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic for the Terriers is tomorrow. March 12. Hiram takes on Otterbein, who they played in their first game of the season, at 9 a.m. at the Lee County Player Development Complex Field #5.
