HIRAM, Ohio - November 15, 2022 - The top-scoring offense in the NCAC continued to pile up the points, as Hiram outscored Pitt Greensburg by 18 points in the second half to earn a 94-87 victory at Price Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The Terriers improve to 1-2 this season and have now won five of their last six home games dating back to last season.
"We played a lot faster, played some 5-guard lineups," head coach
Taylor Roth said of his team's adjustments in the second half. "Everyone out there could score."
Hiram put up 55 points in the second half alone, including a 12-1 run to take a 65-63 lead with 10:45 remaining in the game. The depth of the team was on display throughout the contest, with five different players scoring in double-figures. The Terriers are averaging 93.0 PPG through three games; no other team in the NCAC is averaging more than 77.0 PPG this season.
"It's a really unselfish group," said Roth. "Sharing the ball and shooting with confidence because you know you're going to get (the ball) when you're open -- that's contagious. I think that's what we're seeing right now."
Sophomore guard Trent Jakacki led the team with a career-high 20 points, while senior
Brodgie Gordon chipped in 18 points and 5 assists.
Doug Sartain scored 17 points off the bench in the winning effort.
It was a slow start for the Terriers, who only led for 23 seconds for the entirety of the first half. Pitt Greensburg went 6-11 on three-pointers and took an 11-point lead into the intermission.
The Hiram defense would bring that momentum to a halt in the second half, holding the opposition to a 1-8 clip on three-pointers and just 37 points. The Terriers offense outscored Pitt Greensburg in bench points, 22-2, over the final 20 minutes of the game.
"It settles you a bit and grows your confidence," Roth said of the team's first win of the season. "We've been playing well in spots in all these games and to finally see all 40 minutes go in your direction -- it's a huge momentum change."
Hiram will look to keep it going on Wednesday against Pitt Bradford at 7 p.m. from Price Gymnasium. Live
