GOSHEN, Ind. – January 8, 2022 - Hiram men's volleyball dropped their season opener in a non-conference match at Goshen (Ind.) 3-0.
The early stages of set one started with both teams trading points. After an attack error from Goshen, Hiram took a slight 6-5 lead. The Maple Leafs held strong, however, as both teams would again even the score at 11.
Goshen began to pull away in the first set, scoring four straight points and holding a 15-11 lead. Another four-point run from the home side ensued, with the Maple Leafs now leading 20-13. Five of the last six points of the side went to Goshen, with the home team winning set one 25-15.
Set two started similarly to set one as the score remained tight early on.
Kilvio Montero picked up a kill making it 9-7 with Hiram looking to pull away. As the second set continued, more back-and-forth action continued. After another Montero kill and a Goshen kill, the score was tied at 15. Goshen picked up six straight points after the match was tied now leading 21-15.
A four-point swing in the direction of Hiram cut the lead to 21-19 with kills from Montero and
Andrew Diaz de Padilla. Goshen's lead was just enough, however, as the Maple Leafs held on winning set two, 25-21.
As the two preceding sets were, set three was no different with the score staying tight early on. After a Goshen attacking error, the score remained tied at nine early on. A 5-0 scoring run for the home side saw the Maple Leafs break away with the score now 14-9. Another late push put Goshen up 20-13 as the end of the third set approached.
Dangelo Boehner picked up a kill late, but the Maple Leafs won the third set 25-14 claiming a three-set victory.
Montero led the Terriers in the kills category with eight while Boehner had two. Diaz de Padilla led the squad with 11 assists.
Both
Cory Fischer and
Tom Supan had five digs, with Montero having four.
With the loss, Hiram moves to 0-1 after falling in the non-conference match.
Hiram next hits the court on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. when they host Wittenberg for the home opener inside Price Gymnasium.
