Hiram Men's Basketball Captures Road Victory at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – January 15, 2022 – Hiram men's basketball took down the Yeomen of Oberlin, 76-70, in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game on Saturday night.

In what started as a back-and-forth contest early, Hiram jumped slightly out ahead about five minutes in. Kevin Beans Jr. drained a three, putting the Terriers atop 11-7.

The visiting side's next big run came about four minutes later with Hiram scoring eight-straight points. Ivan Yang connected on an and-one opportunity followed by a layup. Brodgie Gordon made a three-point shot forcing an Oberlin timeout with 11:43 left in the half as the Terriers led 22-12.

Hiram's lead continued to grow as the first half continued. Another and-one opportunity was converted with Oliver Clingain putting the Terriers lead at 30-16 with 8:12 remaining in the first half.

Dorde Otasevic connected on a three for Oberlin, as the Yeomen cut the lead to single digits with under four to play in the first half with the score 34-25. That single-digit lead wouldn't last long, however, as Yang put in a layup to end the half with Hiram leading 42-31.

Coming out of the locker to start the second half, the Terriers didn't slow down. Hiram's lead grew to 19 points about six minutes into the second half after a Yang layup. With Oberlin looking to cut into the lead, the Terriers kept their lead up with Gordon sinking four-straight free throws with 11:21 left in the half and Hiram leading 61-45.

With under seven minutes left in the half, the Yeomen slowly started to chip away at the lead. After back-to-back free throws from Yang, the home team went on a 12-0 road cutting the lead to 68-64 with three minutes left in the game after two Otasevic free throws.

Darien Knowles gave Oberlin a brief lead late putting the Yeoman up 70-69 with about a minute and a half left. Beans Jr. connected on a layup while getting fouled in the process and connected on the free throw. Oberlin failed to score late, as Hiram held on after two Gordon free throws, closing out the game 76-70.

Beans Jr. led in the scoring department for the Terriers with 22 points to go along with four assists. Gordon and Yang were the other two Terriers to reach double figures with 17 and 13. Clingain brought down a team-leading seven rebounds with Sartain getting six.

"I was incredibly proud of our bounce back on the road," said Head Coach Taylor Roth. "We got great leadership from our seniors and juniors. We also got great contributions from young guys like Ivan Yang and Chance Wells. It was a true team win."

Otasevic scored 28 for the home side with Dimitrije Radusinovic putting up 18 points.

Hiram improves to 5-9 on the year and 2-6 in NCAC play. The team is now 3-4 on the road this campaign as they've now won two of their last three games.

NCAC play continues with the team next playing at Wittenberg on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m.
