HIRAM, Ohio - September 4, 2021 – Behind
Kaitlyn Harris' hat trick, the Terriers first since Sept. 2017, Hiram women's soccer rolled past the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes, 6-0, on Saturday in their home opener at Charles A. Henry Field.
After the first few Terrier shots went awry,
Caitlin Tucker broke through off an assist from Harris, finding the back of the net to give Hiram a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Just over four minutes later, Harris notched her first goal of the day, assisted by Tucker, to extend Hiram's lead to 2-0 26 minutes into the half.
Outshooting the Golden Tornadoes 10-2, Hiram took a 2-0 lead into the locker room and further pressed their advantage in the second half. In the 56th minute, Harris tallied her second goal of the day, this time off an assist from
Samantha Carrico, to extend the Terriers lead to 3-0.
And just minutes later, Harris capped off the hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute to extend Hiram's lead to 4-0.
The Terriers would add two more goals to their second-half tally on
Ashley Dekam's strike off an assist from
Emily Turk, and
Kylie Hudson's unassisted goal to extend their lead to 6-0.
And while Geneva found their rythem late in the second, Hiram's defense held strong to finish off the shutout victory.
With the win, the Terriers move to 1-1 on the season, while Geneva drops to 0-2.
Harris and Turk each led the Terriers with four shots apiece, while Harris recorded her first-career hat trick while also adding an assist.
Defensively, both
Skyler Huda and
Anika Zepeda saw playing time in goal for Hiram, combining for the shutout, with Huda recording a team-high three saves.
Hiram women's soccer will look to keep rolling when they host Franciscan University on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 3:00 p.m. at Charles A. Henry Field.
