HIRAM, Ohio – September 21, 2021 – Hiram women's volleyball was defeated by Baldwin Wallace, 3-1, inside Price Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Both teams went back-and-forth at the beginning of set one. Baldwin Wallace snuck out to a 14-10 lead after a three point run.
Kayla Cole notched two kills in a three-point swing that saw Hiram claw back at 17-14. A five-point swing from Baldwin Wallace would give the Yellow Jackets a comfortable 22-14 lead with just a few chances left in the first set. The road team would end up taking set one by a score of 25-19.
Baldwin Wallace again saw an opening early in the set taking a 14-9 lead.
Madison Burns and
Kiara Franks put up the next two points with kills as Hiram aimed for a comeback. Despite trailing 21-13, the Terriers put on a huge comeback. The home team scored nine straight points capped by an
Emily Richardson kill winning 25-22.
In set three it was Hiram's turn to take the lead in the middle stages of the set. After a kill by Franks, the Terriers went up 14-11. The Yellow Jackets got back on track however, scoring the next six points. The run would prove to give BW just enough insurance as they hung on for a set three win at 25-21.
Looking to close out the match, Baldwin Wallace went up 8-5 early in set four. A five-point BW run bolstered the road team's lead to 15-8.
Kayla Cole had two service errors as Hiram kept fighting, seeing them cut the deficit to 20-16. The Yellow Jackets closed out the set scoring five in-a-row winning 25-16 and taking the match three sets to one.
Offensively, seniors Franks and Cole led the team with 14 and ten kills.
Madison Burns and
Emily Chrustic both reached double digits in the assists department posting 13 and 12.
Mackenzie Brannon had 27 digs with Cole having 22. Burns and Richardson had four block assists each for Hiram.
With the loss the team falls to 8-6 on the season.Hiram opens North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play on Friday, Sept. 24 when they play Wittenberg at 7 p.m.
