TIFFIN, Ohio – September 14, 2021 – Hiram women's volleyball dropped a non-conference road contest at Heidelberg, 3-0, on Tuesday.
The home side jumped ahead early in set one and didn't look back.
Emily Richardson recorded a kill for Hiram's second point of the match, but Heidelberg quickly responded. The Student Princes put up five straight points making it 7-2. A mini three-point run saw Hiram cut the lead to 13-11, but Heidelberg answered. The team scored five straight points stretching their lead to 19-12, in what would ultimately be the difference in the first set. Hiram dropped set one 25-18.
In set two both teams started tied at six points each. The Student Princes put up four straight points, followed by Hiram answering with three straight of their own. Midway through set two both teams traded points. Two straight errors from Heidelberg saw Hiram trail 17-15. Deep into the set the home side rallied with four straight points seeing a 23-17 lead. A three-point run that included back-to-back kills from
Kiara Franks and
Madison Burns cut the lead to 23-20. Heidelberg clinched the set however, winning 25-20.
Set three would prove to be the closest of the night and also included Hiram's biggest run. After slight leads early on, Heidelberg pushed out to a 16-10 lead. Despite the deficit, the Terriers rallied scoring five of the next six points. With victory in set, the home team had a 24-18 lead. Hiram tied the set at 24 with a six-point run that included two
Kayla Cole kills. The Student Princes won the final two points ultimately winning the set, 26-24.
Kayla Cole led the offensive attack with 12 kills. Fellow senior
Kiara Franks had seven.
Emily Chrustic and
Mary Landis both reached double digits in assists with Chrustic having 12 and Landis 11.
Chrustic also led Hiram with 11 digs. Franks had nine and
Mackenzie Brannon had eight.
With the loss the Terriers fall to 7-3 on the season losing their first road match of the season.
The team next plays at home on Friday, Sept. 17 against North Park, with two matches at 5 and 7 p.m.
