Hiram Women's Volleyball Defeats Alma in Fourth-Straight Three-Set Win

SANDUSKY, Ohio – September 10, 2021 – Hiram women's volleyball defeated Alma, 3-0, in the opening match of the MIAA-NCAC Crossover event held at Cedar Point Sports Center.

In set one Hiram needed to feel out Alma before taking over midway through. Lyndsey Johns racked up a kill making it 7-6 as the Terriers looked to build momentum. After errors from Alma, Hiram went on a 5-0 run setting the score at 14-7. After a kill from Mary Landis, Alma would use their first timeout and Hiram built on. Alma stormed back near the end of the set making the score 23-18 late. The comeback attempt wouldn't be enough as Hiram won 25-18.

Set two went Hiram's way early and often. The Terriers gradually built their lead and didn't slow down. Kayla Cole notched a kill making it 9-3 as the Hiram lead increased. A four point run late increased the lead to 17-8 after a trio of errors by Alma. Hiram put their foot on the pedal, closing out the set with eight straight points and a 25-11 victory.

Set three was the closest set of the night, but Hiram would still claim victory. A bumpy first start to the set saw the Terriers trail 9-5, but the team would storm back. A seven point run, capped by a Miya Gotto kill, forced an Alma timeout. Both teams traded blows late with the score being tied at 18. A Cate Maguire kill gave Hiram some breathing room extending the lead to 23-19. Alma fought back, but it wouldn't be enough as Hiram prevailed after the early comeback winning set three 25-22.

Kayla Cole led the squad with 13 kills for the match. Defensively, Hiram took a well balanced approach with Landis and Mackenzie Brannon each recording eight digs. Landis also led the team with 15 assists.

With the win the Terriers improve to 6-1 with all six wins coming in straight sets. Additionally, Hiram has now won four matches in a row in three sets.

The team has a quick turnaround tomorrow as they continue play at the Cedar Point Sports Center. Hiram plays Adrian at 10:30 a.m., followed by Trine at 2:30 p.m.
