WASHINGTON, PA. - September 1, 2021 – Hiram women's volleyball swept Washington & Jefferson with a 3-0 victory Wednesday night. The Terriers won each set by at least ten points earning the win in dominant fashion.
Hiram began the match with a 6-2 start with freshman
Emily Richardson earning the kill for the sixth point. The road side quickly stormed ahead in the middle of the set with a six point run putting the score at 12-4. From there Hiram went up 18-6, then rattled off seven more points cruising to a 25-10 first set victory.
Early in set two a trio of kills pushed Hiram out to an early lead with
Madison Burns nailing two straight kills followed by
Kayla Cole getting one of her own for a 9-3 Terrier lead. Hiram stretched out their lead again midway through set two.
Emily Richardson secured two kills in a three-point stretch making it 14-5. Another big stretch of play happened near the end of set two with a six point Hiram run with a Burns kill making it 21-7. The Terriers ended set two on a five point run with the 25
th point coming on an
Emily Chrustic kill.
Washington & Jefferson started on a four-point run, but Hiram quickly battled back. The longest run of the night from the road side happened in the third set with the Terriers spurring off ten straight points. After shooting off to a 14-7 lead, a six point run ensued making it 20-8. Hiram closed out the set by a score of 25-13 earning their first win of the season.
It was a balanced attack in the kills department for the road side as
Kiara Franks and Cole each picking up nine kills.
Emily Richardson had six kills in her first collegiate match with
Madison Burns earning three.
Chrustic tallied a team high 17 assists with
Mackenzie Brannon notching eight. In the digs department Brannon took home the most on the night with 14 and freshman
Mary Landis picked up eight in her first collegiate game.
As a team Hiram had 40 kills, 37 assists and 53 digs.
The Terriers next play in the Bearcat Challenge hosted by Saint Vincent College where they will play four games in two days first with Pitt. Bradford on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m.
