PITTSBURGH, Pa. – March 28, 2021 – Hiram men's basketball won in overtime at Carnegie Mellon, 84-74, on Sunday afternoon inside Skibo Gymnasium.
Carnegie Mellon got off to a hot start with a 10-0 lead after a Joey Krempa bucket with 15:21 remaining in the first half.
The Tartans were able to hold the lead for much of the early part of the first half. A made three point shot from
Brodgie Gordon however kept the Terriers engaged cutting the CMU lead to 26-25 with 3:16 left in the half.
The home team went on a 9-0 run to close out the first half with the Tartans leading 35-25 at intermission.
Coming out of the break Carnegie Mellon was able to hold their lead. Kevin Sax hit a jump shot at the 17:02 mark making it 40-32.
With less than ten minutes remaining in regulation, Hiram started inching closer to the lead. A three point shot by
Doug Sartain with 7:46 left in the second half made it 57-53 Tartans. Sartain would hit another three point shot with 4:38 remaining cutting the CMU lead to 65-62.
With 47 seconds left on the clock in the second half Hiram was trailing by four points. Gordon made two free throws making the score 71-68 Carnegie Mellon.
Kevin Beans Jr. hit a three point shot with 20 seconds left tying the contest at 71. The buzzer beater attempt from CMU fell short and the game headed to overtime.
Sartain made a three point shot with 3:43 left in the first overtime and the Terriers didn't look back leading 77-73. Beans Jr. closed out the scoring for Hiram making four straight free throws with less than a minute left in overtime securing the Terriers win at 84-74. Hiram outscored CMU 13-3 in the overtime period.
Three Terriers had 20 points or more in the road contest. Gordon had 29 with Sartain adding 22 and Beans Jr. scoring 20. Sartain made six three point shots and Beans Jr. notched ten rebounds making for a double-double. Gordon topped his previous season high of 28 points which he scored at Ohio Wesleyan. The 22 points scored for Sartain is a career high as well as the six three pointers made for the freshman.
Oliver Clingain also had a double-double scoring ten points with 14 rebounds.
This was the first win for the Terriers in overtime since February 12, 2020 when Hiram knocked off Kenyon, 95-92 in double overtime inside Price Gymnasium.
Taylor Roth picked up his first career win as head coach of Hiram with the OT victory.
