HIRAM, Ohio – March 17, 2021 – Hiram College men's volleyball swept Saint Vincent 3-0 on Wednesday night inside Price Gymnasium marking the first home win of the 2021 season.
The first set consisted of a back and forth contest with Saint Vincent jumping out to an 8-5 lead thanks to a kill from Matthew Minkin. Hiram would roar back however, going up 14-10 on an attack error on Mikin with blocks from
Dangelo Boehner and
Kilvio Montero.
The lead continued to get stretched for Hiram, getting up to a 22-16 lead from a
Grant Phelan kill. The Terriers would take the first set 25-18.
Two four point swings helped the Terriers bolster their lead further into the second set. Hiram would go up 13-6 on a kill by Boehner. The Bearcats would get the next point making it 13-7.
An attack error by Saint Vincent would cap off another four-point swing for the home side making the lead 17-7. The Bearcats would fight for a few points near the end of the second set, but Hiram would take home the second set by a score of 25-12.
The Terriers would again get out to an early lead and not look back in the third and final set. A
Hunter Rock kill would give the home team an 11-3 lead.
Andrew Gard would continue the dominant third set for Hiram adding a kill to make it 14-6.
Grant Phelan would go on a three-point stretch of his own getting three consecutive kills being a part of a five point run to make it 21-8 Terriers.
Hiram would close out the third set with a kill from
Jake Lininger, winning the third set 25-11 and winning the match 3-0.
Montero and Phelan each had eight kills for the home side. Lininger added 20 assists with
Andrew Diaz chipping in with nine.
The win is also the first home win for Head Coach
Kevin Kustura.
Hiram improves to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the AMCC. Saint Vincent drops to 0-3 and is 0-2 in AMCC play.
The Terriers will stay home for their next match facing Penn State Behrend on Saturday, March 20 at 6 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
