HIRAM, Ohio – November 9, 2021 – Hiram men's basketball dropped their first game of the season vs. Baldwin Wallace, falling 91-65 inside Price Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets started off with a 10-3 lead after an Anthony Mazzeo three-point shot just under three minutes into the contest.
Doug Sartain answered with a three of his own about three minutes later as Hiram looked to catch up down 14-10.
Kevin Beans Jr. tied the ballgame at 17 with 11:12 to go in the first half. A 12-0 run jumped BW's lead to 36-23 down the stretch in the first half. Hiram cut the lead to ten after a
Joe Ayo three made the score 40-30 with 2:16 left.
Baldwin Wallace closed out the half with a Drew Wennes jumper pushing the lead to 47-34 as both teams headed to the locker room.
Coming out of the break, Christian Pfeiffer scored back-to-back points over a two-minute stretch making it 53-41 as the Terriers continued to look to break the BW lead.
Two free throws from
Gavin Etter put the home team within single digits as the freshman cut the lead to 59-51.
The Yellow Jackets made their lead 15 with a jump shot from Shane Zalba extending it to 71-56.
Mazzeo continued to find the bottom of the net for Baldwin Wallace scoring eight consecutive points for BW as the Yellow Jackets looked to put the ballgame away at 81-62.
Rodney James concluded the scoring for the ballgame with a made free throw, as Baldwin Wallace won 91-65.
Beans Jr. and
Virgil Crawford led the Terriers in scoring with 12 each. On the boards,
Tyler McMillion led the squad with eight, as
Oliver Clingain had six.
Brodgie Gordon was the lead assist man having six.
Mazzeo led all scorers in the game with 45 as he went 17-25 from the field and 9-13 from three. Pfeiffer led with 12 rebounds and Jake Snyder had four assists.
As a team, Baldwin Wallace shot 47.5% from the field and 38.7% from three. Hiram shot 37.1% from the field and 21.4% from three. Baldwin Wallace led the rebound battle with 46 as Hiram brought down 38 off the glass.
Hiram next plays in the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament starting on Friday, Nov. 12, playing Penn State Abington at 8 p.m.
