Hiram Men's Basketball Wins Gettysburg Tournament, Defeating Gettysburg, 78-63

Virgil Crawford named to All-Tournament Team, Oliver Clingain named Tournament MVP

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – November 13, 2021 – Coming off of a tight win last night vs Penn State Abington, Hiram men's basketball defeated Gettysburg, 78-63 Saturday night, winning the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament.

As both teams traded baskets early in the first half, Gettysburg took a slight 12-7 lead less than six minutes in. About a minute later, Doug Sartain drilled a three-pointer as the Terriers took a 13-12 lead with 13:28 remaining.

The Bullets had their biggest lead of the first half with 6:16 remaining in the first half after Jack Rooney sunk a three-point shot extending the lead to 23-15. As the scoring picked up near the end of the first half, Ishmaaeel Hayes-Muhammad knocked down two free throws tying it at 31.

Tyler McMillion closed the scoring for Hiram at the end of the half, sinking a free throw and making a three-point shot. At the break, Gettysburg led 37-36.

The Terriers came out of the locker room scoring quickly and taking the lead. A 12-3 run by Hiram pushed the lead to 50-42 forcing a Gettysburg timeout. Kevin Beans Jr. and Spencer Willman each made three-point shots within 30 seconds of each other forcing another Bullets timeout with the score now 61-46.

Hiram held onto their double-digit lead down the stretch, as a Sartain three-pointer made the lead 20 at 73-53 with 4:36 left in regulation. Two McMillion free throws closed the scoring for the road team, as the Terriers won 78-63.

"It was another great defensive effort. Our scheme is starting to click and we're playing connected," Head Coach Taylor Roth said. "Offensively, it was good to see the ball go in. It was a total team effort and it feels great to bring a trophy back to Hiram."

Virgil Crawford and Clingain were named to the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament All-Tournament Team, with Clingain winning MVP.

Clingain was the top scorer for Hiram posting 18 rebounds and 12 rebounds, good for his first double-double of the year. Beans Jr. finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Sartain and Willman were the two other members of the team reaching double figures with Sartain scoring 13 and Willman 11.

Hiram finished the contest shooting 48.2% from the field and 44.8% from three-point range.

With the two wins on the weekend, the team improves to 2-1 on the season.

The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 20 vs. Waynesburg at 2 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
