OBERLIN, Ohio - October 15, 2021 – Shelby Jackson gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead headed into halftime and a lightning delay, but two second-half scores proved to be the difference as Hiram women's soccer fell to the Oberlin College Yeowomen, 2-1, on Friday in a hard-fought conference matchup.
Anika Zepeda and the Terriers held off a few early shots by the Yeowomen, tallying four first-half saves before
Mackenzie Morrison notched the first shot of the night for the Terriers just under 16 minutes into the match.
Just over 13 minutes later, Jackson scored her first collegiate goal, finding her way past the keeper to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
But after the halftime break and a lightning delay, Oberlin quickly knotted things up in the second half on Heather Benway's fourth goal of the season, assisted by Morgan Cianfichi to even the match at one-all.
And after a few Yeowomen corner kicks, Zoe Garver gave the Oberlin a 2-1 lead off another Benway assist with just under 29 minutes to play.
Hiram then upped the offensive pressure, recording seven second-half shots, including a pair by
Amanda Pittman and
Ashley Dekam that looked good off the boot, but Isabelle Smith and the crossbar kept the Terriers off the scoreboard the rest of the way, as Oberlin eked out the 2-1 victory.
With the loss, Hiram falls to 2-13 (0-5 NCAC), while Oberlin moves to 7-5-1 (3-1-1 NCAC) on the year.
Jackson and
Kaitlyn Harris each led the Terriers with three shots, while
Mackenzie Morrison notched a pair. In goal for Hiram, Zepeda recorded five saves.
As a team, Hiram outshot the Yeowomen, 11-7, and drew seven fouls, committing just one themselves.
The Terriers next host the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Charles A. Henry Field.
