Women's Basketball Drops Tough Battle Against No. 4 DePauw

HIRAM, Ohio – February 8, 2020 – The Hiram College women's basketball team dropped a tough 65-62 home decision to No. 4-ranked DePauw, Saturday afternoon.  
 
The Terriers are now 7-15 on the season and 4-9 in NCAC play, while the Tigers push their record to 21-1 and remain a perfect 13-0 in conference action. 
 
Hiram dominated both sides of the floor in the first quarter. The Terriers kept the Tigers scoreless throughout the first four minutes, with junior Tashauna Wright and freshman Haley Thompson each hitting a basket to stretch the Hiram lead to 4-0.  
 
The Terriers held DePauw to 11 points in the opening frame while tacking on 14 points of their own. Wright led the way with five, Thompson trailed with four, while junior pair Madison Branch and Alainna Conroy added three and two points respectively.  
 
Hiram continued their strong offensive play in the second, jumping out to an 11-point lead (33-22). Inside the final two minutes of the second, the Terriers went on a 9-6 scoring run, stretching their advantage to 14.  
 
After the first 20 minutes of action, the Terriers led 42-28, shooting 8-9 from the free-throw line, forcing eight turnovers, and tallying five steals.  
 
Despite the Tigers holding Hiram to just nine points in the third quarter, the Terriers maintained their advantage finishing the frame up 51-50.  
 
The last quarter was played close, with DePauw taking their first lead of the half off a three from Maeve Summerville (55-53). 
 
Wright tied the game 55-55 less than a minute later before the Tigers posted six unanswered baskets (61-55). 
 
Thompson hit a three sparking the last Hiram run of the night, putting the Terriers ahead by one (62-61). The freshman tallied five of the last seven points from the Terriers.  
 
The game came down to the final two minutes where DePauw's Mya Shannon hit a basket and a pair of shots from the free-throw line to cement their 65-62 victory.  
 
Wright and Thompson both finished with 19 points apiece, a career-high for Thompson.  
 
Conroy added 11 points, three steals, and two rebounds. 
 
Hiram will hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 12 to take on Kenyon. The matchup with the Ladies is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
