Offensive Power Late In Game Propels Hiram Over Oberlin

Women's Basketball Opens Season With A Win

HIRAM, Ohio – November 6, 2026 – Hiram College women's basketball opened its 2026-27 campaign on Friday night with a 54-49 victory over Oberlin College inside Price Gymnasium. The season-opening win also marked the first victory at Hiram for decorated Head Coach Jim Wiedie, who made his debut at the helm of the Terriers.

The game was tightly contested from start to finish, as neither team held a lead larger than five points throughout the night.

Juliana Gunn provided an early spark for the Terriers, scoring seven quick points to give Hiram a 10-8 advantage with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. Emma Osborn converted a tough and-one opportunity to close out the opening quarter with a 15-13 lead.

The second quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams managing just eight points apiece. Aside from a made free throw, Hiram's first field goal of the quarter came off a steal by Maya Joiner, who took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup. Joiner made her presence felt on both ends of the floor, recording three steals, four assists and eight rebounds.

Hiram's freshman class also provided an offensive boost, as Kayla Munn knocked down a jumper and Hallie Vie Burton connected from beyond the arc for their first collegiate points to close out the half.

Oberlin built one of its largest leads of the night with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter, but Hiram quickly responded with back-to-back jumpers from Isabella Caceres and Osborn. The Yeowomen regained a four-point advantage in the closing seconds before Caceres delivered a buzzer-beating three-pointer from just inside the half-court line to trim the deficit to one heading into the final quarter.

After Oberlin grabbed a 42-37 lead with 6:30 remaining in the fourth, Hiram's offense found its rhythm, putting together its highest-scoring quarter of the night with 20 points.

The offensive surge began with Caceres knocking down her fourth three-pointer of the night, followed by a five-point swing from Star Owens.

Elizabeth Doup delivered one of the biggest shots of the night, drilling a clutch three-pointer to put Hiram ahead by one. The Terriers remained composed at the free-throw line, going a perfect 6-for-6 down the stretch to seal the hard-fought 54-49 victory.

Caceres led the Terriers offensively with 14 points, while Owens contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Hiram will return to action next Friday when it travels to Albion, Michigan, to compete in the Albion Tournament.
