ALMA, Mich. - February 16, 2020 – The Hiram Terriers Cheer & STUNT team fell to Maryville University and Ferris State in competitive matches on Sunday at the Alma College STUNT Tournament at Art Smith Arena.
Maryville got on the scoreboard first against the Terriers, taking a 7-1 halftime lead. Hiram bounced back, equaling the Saints point total in the third quarter, but Maryville pulled away in the fourth to pick up the 17-6 victory.
Against the Bulldogs, Hiram again got off to a slow start and trailed 6-2 at the half. But the Terriers picked up three points in the third quarter and trailed by just one point, 9-8, after part one of the fourth quarter.
"Our game against Ferris was really competitive, which is why we love STUNT so much; we could feel the intensity surrounding the mat," Head Coach Samantha Campbell said. "Although they're a DII team, they're our biggest rival. It is always back and forth with them."
But Ferris State picked up all three points in the second round of quarter four to take a 12-8 lead. And although the Terriers earned all three points in the third round, the Bulldogs escaped with a 14-11 victory.
"Overall, we played hard. We rallied together and performed great quarter 4 routines, knowing that we were down and needed to in order to have a shot at winning," Campbell said. "It was fun for me to see them so competitive and into the game."
"When comparing these games to our first games of the season, we are getting fewer deductions which shows we are improving. As long as that continues we will end the season on a high note," Campbell said.
The Terriers are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 23 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio for matchups with the Dragons and Olivet College at The Gillmor Student Center.
