Box Score HIRAM, Ohio - January 15, 2020 – Led by Brodgie Gordon's career-high 31 points, Hiram Terriers men's basketball defeated the Allegheny College Gators, 80-79 on Wednesday at Price Gymnasium.
After trading buckets for the first five minutes, Allegheny scored six-straight to take a 10-4 lead with 14:28 left in the first. The Terriers though, quickly stormed back with a 12-3 run to tie the game at 13 on Sherman Dean III's layup, and took the lead on Dean's three-pointer with 12:08 remaining in the half.
In a first half that featured nine ties and 11 lead changes, the Gators soon afterwards tied things up at 18-18 on Jordan Greynold's three-pointer, and after back-to-back buckets by Brian Roberts Jr. and Antonio McQueen, the score again stood tied at 20.
Gordon and Greynolds knocked down three-pointers to again tie the score, 23-23 with 9:51 left in the first half, before Gordon gave the Terriers a two-point, 25-23, lead on a jumper.
An Allegheny free throw cut Hiram's lead to one, and the Terriers held their one-point lead for almost three minutes before a Nijon Kirkman three gave the Gators a 27-25 lead. But McQueen answered with a jumper to again knot the score at 27-all.
The Terriers and Gators stood tied at 30-30 and 32-32 over the next three minutes, before Hiram took a one-point advantage into the halftime break, up 38-37.
Gordon led the Terriers with 17 first-half points, while McQueen added 12 points and five rebounds.
The second half featured just three ties and four lead changes, as the Gators opened an early, second-half lead. Kirkman gave Allegheny its largest lead of the second half, 44-40, on a three-pointer with 18:11 to play, but the Terriers tied things up at 48 just over minutes later on Dean III's second three-pointer of the game.
After Jordan Rawls connected on two free throws, the Gators took what would be their last lead of the game. McQueen tied things up at 50 and Gordon's layup with 13:45 left gave the Terriers a two-point lead.
Two more Gator free throws from Keeno Holmes again tied the score at 52, before a 10-2 run over the next three minutes gave the Terriers an eight-point, 62-54, lead, forcing Allegheny to take a timeout.
The Gators cut the deficit to five coming out of the timeout, but Hiram answered with a 5-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 71-61, heading into the final eight minutes.
A 5-0 Gator run cut the Terriers' lead in half, and with just two minutes to play, Hiram's lead was down to just four, 78-74.
Greynolds cut the lead to one, 78-77, with a three-pointer, but Gordon answered with a jumper to make it a three-point game with 52 seconds to play.
Rawls again cut it to one, 80-79, before Allegheny took a 30 second timeout. And though Gordon turned the ball over in the Terriers final possession, the Gators didn't get a shot off with a chance to win, and Hiram pulled out an 80-79 victory.
With the win, the Terriers move to 5-9 (2-5 NCAC) on the season, while Allegheny drops to 9-5 (3-4 NCAC).
Gordon led the Terriers with a career-high 31 points, adding three rebounds and three steals. McQueen tallied 20 points and nine rebounds, while Dean III added 12 points and three assists.
McMillion also added nine points and nine rebounds, falling just shy of his second double-double of the season.
In a game that featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes, the Terriers outscored the Gators, 48-26 in the paint and 22-8 off turnovers.
The Terriers next take on the Oberlin College Yeomen on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Philips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio at 3:00 p.m.
