Terriers Clinch Home Opener Victory Over Mount Union

Sept. 3 – HIRAM, Ohio – The Hiram College volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Mount Union in the Terrier's home opener on Tuesday night. 
 
Hiram started the match off strong with a 25-19 set victory over the Raiders. The Terriers later dropped set two 25-19, before claiming set wins in the third and fourth, respectively.  
 
In set one, Mount Union jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Hiram responded with a 6-0 run to stretch their advantage to 8-3.  
 
Kiara Franks and Lindsey Walker notched a pair of kills each in the run.  
 
From there Hiram's lead would swell as big as six after they capitalized off back-to-back Mount Union attack errors (19-13).  
 
To finish off the set the Terriers would post five-straight points including kills from Kayla Cole and Madison Fortune, and a service ace from Emily Chrustic (25-19).  
 
The tides turned in the second set with Hiram hitting below .100, falling 25-19 to Mount Union.  
 
Things picked up in the next frame as the Terriers finished with 13 kills in the 25-20 set win. Hiram did some of their best work in the frame holding the Raiders to a .000 hitting percentage.  
 
The Terriers cut their early deficit, creating their largest lead of the set with seven-straight points (11-4).  
 
Kills from Jaya Martin, Cole, and Walker stretched the Hiram advantage to 10 (17-7).  
 
The Terriers would maintain the lead closing out the set to secure the 25-20 win.  
 
The final frame of the night was a nail-biting battle with the set seeing over 10 ties, pushing the game into extra points.   
 
Down by one (28-27), the Terriers would go one a 3-0 run to close out the game. The run included kills from Fortune and Walker and an ace from Mackenzie Brannon.  
 
Cole paved the way for the Hiram win with 14 kills and seven digs, while Walker finished the night with a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Franks tallied 11 kills and a dig.  
 
Chrustic and Stahl played a vital role in the four-set win. Chrustic notched 41 of the teams 46 assists with 11 digs. Stahl finished the night with 20 digs and 3 assists.  
 
As a unit, Hiram tallied eight aces, including three by Mackenzie Brannon and two from Emily Chrustic and Cole, and one ace from Lindsey Walker
 
The Terriers will return to the court on Friday, September 6 at 7 pm as they take on Alma (Mich.) on the road.
