Volleyball sweeps past Chatham (Pa.) and Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) to open 2016 season

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Hiram College volleyball team posted a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Chatham (Pa.) and Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) to open the 2016 season on Friday at the La Roche (Pa.) Tournament.

The Terriers (2-0) topped Chatham (0-3) 25-18, 25-18, 25-9 to open play on the evening.

Senior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) paced Hiram with 20 kills while also adding eight digs.

Junior Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) posted nine kills and no errors, finishing with a sizzling .450 hitting mark.

Senior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) and freshman Madison Fortune (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) each finished with double digit digs with 14 and 10, respectively.

Senior Claire Maier (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) dished out a match-high 34 assists in the victory.

Against Washington & Jefferson, the Terriers posted a 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 win.

Three players recorded double digit kills, led by Jay, who finished with 18. Kelly added a career-high 11 kills and Wilson finished with 10.

Senior Megan Schaefer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) posted a carer-high 30 digs, with Kelly adding 11 and freshman Amber Ricketts (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg) chipping in with 10.

Maier would record 20 assists to go along with 14 digs.

Hiram will close out play at the tournament on Saturday, September 3 with a pair of matches. The Terriers will take on Oberlin in a non-conference contest at 10 a.m. and York (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
