HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College volleyball team recorded victories over Marietta and Fredonia State (N.Y.) on the first day of the Hiram Invitational.
The Terriers are now 9-3 on the season.
Against Marietta (4-4), senior Katie Barton (Newbury, Ohio) posted a match-high 12 kills. Senior Lindsay Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) added 11 kills and 11 digs and senior Logan Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) had eight kills and a scorching .615 hitting percentage.
The Terriers would use large runs in the early portion of all three sets to post a 25-14, 25-14, 25-12 victory.
Hiram used a 6-0 run in the first set to open a 11-5 edge, leading by at least four points for the rest of the set.
In Set 2, it was an early 8-0 run that gave the Terriers a 10-2 advantage, en route to a 25-14 win.
The final set saw the Terriers build an early 8-1 lead and never look back, closing out the set and match 25-12.
Junior Claire Maier (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) finished with 37 assists and senior Ashton Webb (Wadsworth, Ohio/Norton) and junior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Against Fredonia State (10-2), the Blue Devils won the first two sets to jump out to a 2-0 lead, before the Terriers responded by winning the next three sets.
Hiram jumped out to a 16-12 lead and controlled play for the remainder of the set, taking 25-14.
A kill by junior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) gave Hiram a 20-17 lead in Set 4. The Terriers would continue to hold the lead and a kill by Barton gave Set 4 to Hiram 25-22.
In the deciding set, the Blue Devils were able to jump out to an early 5-2 lead. But the Terriers would storm back with a 7-2 run to take a 9-7 advantage.
Fredonia State would battle back to take a 11-10 lead, but Hiram would win four straight points to take a 14-11 lead.
The Blue Devils would counter and win the next two points to trim the Terrier lead to 14-13, but a kill by Lindsay Brewer capped the thrilling five set win.
Lindsay Brewer led the Hiram attack with 24 kills and a .360 hitting percentage. She also added 19 digs.
Barton added 13 kills and Jay finished with 12. Kelly had a season-high 28 digs, with Webb finishing with 16 and junior Megan Schaefer (Elyria, Ohio) chipping in with 11.
Maier recorded 55 assists in the win.
Hiram will conclude the two day invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Terriers will take on Mount Saint Joseph at 2 p.m. and Kalamazoo (Mich.) at 6 p.m.
