Volleyball Beats Kenyon in First Match of NCAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO  --  The second-seeded Hiram College volleyball team defeated seventh-seed Kenyon College, 3-0, to open the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield.

The Terriers defeated the Ladies by the scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17.  The offense was led by freshman Marissa Jay (Parma/Padua Franciscan) with 10 kills.  All-NCAC sophomore Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) was second with nine kills and sophomore Lindsay Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) was third with seven kills.  Setting up the offense was All-NCAC junior Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) with a match-high 31 set assists. 

Defensively, senior Danielle Day (Newbury) recorded the most digs with eight, followed by All-NCAC junior Jennifer Yardas (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) with seven digs and junior Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) rounded out the top three with six digs.  At the net, Moore led the team in blocking with five assists.  Freshman Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) was second with four assists and Mortimer added three assists.

Hiram will face third-seeded Denison University in a semifinal match tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 9) with the winner advancing to the tournament championship match.  The Terriers defeated the Big Red, 3-0, earlier this season in the regular-season matchup between the two teams in Granville.  Tomorrow's match is set to begin at noon in Springfield.
