Volleyball Takes Two at Tri-Match

HIRAM, OHIO  --  The Hiram College volleyball team came away with a pair of victories against North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Denison University and non-conference foe La Roche (Pa.) College in a tri-match at Price Gymnasium.  The Terriers defeated the Big Red, 3-0, and came out on top against the Redhawks, 3-1.

With the victories, the Terriers improve to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC.

Against Denison, Hiram won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-17.  Leading the Terrier offense was senior outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) with 13 kills.  Sophomore right side player Jennifer Yardas (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) was second with six kills.  Setting up the offense was sophomore Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) with 30 assists. 

Defensively, three players recorded 10 or more digs with sophomore defensive specialist Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) with a team-high 15 digs.  Senior libero Danielle Day (Newbury) was second with 14 digs and Pund added 13 digs.  Freshman middle hitter Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) tallied a seven total blocks (three solo and four assists).

In the match against La Roche, Hiram won with the scores of 25-11, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15.  Freshman middle hitter Mackenzie Mulligan (Poland/Poland Seminary) and freshman right side player Katie Barton (Newbury) both recorded 10 kills to lead the Terriers offensively.  Freshman outside hitter Kayla Foltz (Canton/Perry) was next with eight kills.  Moore recorded 19 set assists to lead the team, while Day recorded five service aces to roundout the offensive leaders.

Day also led the team defensively with 19 digs.  Freshman middle hitter Logan Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) had a team-best five total blocks (five assists) and three players tied with three blocks.

Hiram will square off against the same La Roche team on Wednesday, Oct. 3 in a non-conference match in Pittsburgh, Pa.  The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
