Box Score HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College women's basketball team lost a 58-42 decision against Kenyon College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium.
Kenyon (8-1, 2-0 NCAC) looked to make a statement early, scoring the game's first 11 points to jump out to an 11-point edge. Hiram (3-5, 0-3 NCAC) finally got on the board at the 13:26 minute mark of the first half thanks to a jumper by junior guard/forward Alexis Kemper (Centerville), making the score 11-2. The sluggish shooting start continued for the Terriers allowing the Ladies to continue to pull away and had a 16-3 lead at the 10:57 mark. The Hiram offense started to show some life late in the game and got to within nine points on several occassions, including a 32-23, margin with a 1:33 to go following a pair of free-throws by sophomore forward Samantha Morford (Jefferson). But Kenyon would increase the lead back to double-figures at the half with a score of 35-25.
In the second half, Kenyon began the period in similar fashion to first outscoring Hiram, 12-1, in the first 6:02 to extend the lead to 21 points, 47-26, with 14:29 left in the game. The Ladies went on to lead by as many as 24 points on two occassions with the last one coming at the 7:06 mark with a score of 57-33. Hiram scored the final six points of the game, but it was the Ladies who'd come out on top by the final of 58-42.
Kenyon shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor for the game and was led by Maureen Hirt who finished with 14 points on five-of-14 shooting (35.7 percent). Two other players scored in double-digits with Kayla Ernst scoring 12 points and Maggie Boelter added 10 points.
Hiram converted 30.0 percent (15-of-50) of its shots for the game and was led by the trio of Morford, junior guard Marisa Thomas (Lorain/Amherst) and freshman forward Christy Griffin (Middlefield/Cardinal) who all scored eight points each. Morford and Griffin also each grabbed a game-tying high seven rebounds.
Hiram will look to end its four-game losing streak when the Terriers host Heidelberg University in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
