ADRIAN, MICH. – The Hiram College softball team was defeated by DePauw (Ind.) University, 7-0, today (Monday, May 16) in the title game of the 2011 NCAA Divsion III Adrian Regional Tournament hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Mich.
The Terriers will finish as runners-up in the tournament and will end their season with a record-setting 29-14 overall record. Hiram reached the regional title game for the first time in program history in their second overall trip to the NCAA postseason. The Tigers improve to 31-9-1 and will advance to the NCAA Divsion III Softball World Series.
In the third game in the past two days against DePauw, the Tigers grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. DePauw added to its lead with a five-run second to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The seven runs would be all the Tigers would need as Hiram could not get any runs across home plate and fell 7-0.
Hiram had four hits in the game with freshman outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's) leading the way going two-of-three overall. Junior All-North Coast Athletic Conference outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) and junior All-Region utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) also recorded hits in the game.
Freshman All-NCAC pitcher/utility player Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) started the game and pitched an inning-and-a-third giving up five runs on seven hits and struck out one batter. She would also suffer the loss and ends her "rookie" season with a 16-9 overall record in a Hiram single-season record 36 appearances. Junior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield/Cardinal) came on in relief and pitched a third of an inning allowing two runs on two hits. Freshman Lindsay Colasinski (Southgate, Mich./Southgate) finished the game and pitched four-and-a-third solid innings allowing no runs and just three hits.
Following the tournament, Lane and Langland were both selected to the All-Tournament Team as at-large picks.
