ADRIAN, MICH. – The Hiram College softball team was defeated by top-seeded DePauw (Ind.) University, 8-0, in five innings today (Saturday, May 14) in the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Mich.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 27-13 overall and the Tigers improve to 30-8-1 overall for the season.
DePauw jumped out early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Tigers added runs in the second and the third frames to increase the margin to a commanding 6-0 margin. DePauw then put the game away with a pair of runs in the fifth to go up by eight runs, envoking the eight-run rule and a final score of 8-0.
Hiram had three hits in the game with junior All-NCAC outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad), junior All-Region utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) and freshman All-NCAC pitcher/utility player Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) each recording hits.
On the mound, Lane got the start and pitched three innings, but was given the loss, dropping her to 14-8 overall for the season. She allowed six runs on four hits and had one strikeout. Sophomore Ashley Hinkle (Parma) pitched the final inning-and-a-third giving up two runs on three hits.
Hiram will look to avoid elimination with a matchup against Trine (Ind.) University tomorrow (Sunday, May 15) in a game that begins at noon in Adrian, Mich.
