HIRAM, Ohio - February 4, 2023 - The Hiram men's wrestling team hosted its second event of the season, losing three duals as part of a quad meet on Saturday afternoon at Fleming Fieldhouse.
The Terriers fell short to Cornerstone (31-18), Case Western Reserve University (42-6) and Heidelberg (47-3). Heidelberg also beat Case (27-19) and Cornerstone (43-8) in its other two duals.
Hiram earned its three wins against Cornerstone by forfeit; Alex Savering (141 lbs), Grayson Smith (149) and Zach Harper (197) all picked up victories. The dual finished with a highly competitive battle between Devan Welch (285) and Sterling McLaughlin, which ended in an overtime loss (3-2).
Welch would later bounce back and pick up the Terriers' lone win against Case Western Reserve University, beating Keith Heineman by fall (2:30). Kwame Stewart (185) also had a strong effort before losing to Calvin Cai by fall (5:30).
The Terriers wrapped up the day against Heidelberg, the only team to go undefeated at the event. Savering highlighted the dual with a win by decision (14-7) over Joshua Gibson.
Hiram will next head to the campus of Penn State Behrend to take part in the AMCC Championships next Sunday at 10 a.m.
